National Opera: Modeling for Facade Lighting

Summary

 

  • The National Opera House is adorned with rich sculptural elements. Two winged female figures, mythical guardian spirits, soar above the central entrance, symbolizing the artist's noble aspirations. According to witnesses, the façade once featured busts of composers Mikhail Glinka and Alexander Serov, gifted to Kyiv by artists from the Mariinsky Theatre in St. Petersburg. In 1934, during the building's restoration, the busts were removed. However, the griffins continue to stand guard to this day. For over eight decades, V. Schreter's architectural masterpiece remained largely unchanged, without significant reconstruction or major repairs. From 1984 to 1987, extensive renovations were carried out to restore the structure damaged during wartime. After the restoration, the theater's total area increased by a third, now reaching 60,000 square meters. It can accommodate 1,304 spectators simultaneously. Every evening, the curtain rises on the stage, enchanting audiences with the marvelous world of singing and dancing. Victor Schreter's architectural gem has truly become the Temple of Muse for opera and ballet art.
  • The objective of the project is to model light animation and video projection on the façade of a building using Revit software.

 

Initial Data & Work Timeline:

 

  • The main facade of the building served as the input data for scanning and modeling. To simplify the modeling of complex architectural elements, a level of detail (LOD) 300 was used, with a modeling area of 630 m2 and a corresponding volume of 4,590 m3. The project was completed within a three-week timeframe.
