What Is Laser Scanning and Its Principles?

Laser 3D scanning is a modern technology, combined with a surveying system that measures the distance from the scanner to the points of the object at a fairly high speed and registers the corresponding directions, followed by the creation of a three-dimensional image in the contour of the point cloud. The emergence of this technology has changed the field of geodesy, land management, modeling, and design for the better! What used to take days or weeks became possible to do in hours thanks to this technology, which combined all the features of various geodetic properties in one device.

 

The principle of operation of a laser scanner is similar to the principle of operation of a reflectorless electronic total station and consists in measuring the time of passage of a laser beam from the emitter to the reflecting surface and back to the receiver. By dividing this time by the speed of propagation of the laser beam, the distance to the object is determined. The scanner consists of a laser range finder adapted for high-frequency operation and a laser beam scanning unit. A servomotor and a polygonal mirror or a prism act as a scanning unit in the scanner. The servomotor deflects the beam by a given angle in the horizontal plane, while the entire upper part of the scanner rotates. Scanning in the vertical plane is carried out due to rotation or oscillation of the mirror.

 

The method of operation of modern laser rangefinders used in scanners is based on pulse and phase reflectorless distance measurement methods.

During the scanning process, the direction of propagation of the laser beam and the distance to the points of the object are recorded. The result of the scanner is an array (cloud) of points of laser reflections from objects in the scanner's field of view, with five characteristics, namely three spatial coordinates, intensity and real color. The characteristics of the real color for each point is obtained using a digital camera. The Swiss company Leica Geosystems is a world leader in the development of laser technologies and the production of laser scanners.
